  1. The one that fits you the best/is most comfortable and enjoyable for long rides. Smaller tires is a disadvantage. If both fit equally, I would personally choose the trek 520.

Either should to be in good condition or serviced to be in good condition before you make any trip.

  2. As long as the fit is good, I’d go with the Trek. The ability for larger tires far outweighs any speed advantage – you’ll be far more comfortable. The gearing is already set for loaded rides. And that bike will last forever.

The Trek was a higher end bike in its day, but it’s way older and I really like disc brakes. If it fits you I would get the Norco and put the biggest tires that will fit on it.

Either bike will hold up fine for what you’re doing.

  4. Just wanted to post that a quick search says the max tire width for 700c on the Norco is 45mm. Not huge but reasonable for any paved trip and decent for smooth gravel or shorter trips likeOP’s 2-3 day trip.

Probably leaning towards the Norco, especially if it’s 9 speed and cassette.

Can’t see any top rear eyelets on the trek either. Probably there?

Whichever you get, if one has a freewheel and one a cassette, pick the cassette one.

  6. Upright handlebars FOR SURE

So there is no wrong way to tour

But sacrificing efficiency for comfort… you’re already tugging 30lbs of gear… be comfortable and get there a little later

Over 50+ days your body will still be thanking you instead of having thrown in the towel a thousand miles back
