The ferrule won't stay in. The ferrule is the one which came with the red cable set I bought to match my bike. I push in and try to twist the ferrule to stay in place but it come out with barely any effort. What am I doing wrong? Do I need a specific ferrule for the m5100 shifter?

it doesnt need to have a friction fit in the shifter to function correctly, the important part is its on the housing. carry on.
Is it all the way hooked up? The housing needs pressure from the cable being tight to stay in. Or your housing is too short.
It is the cable tension that keeps the housing in place, not the fit tolerance.
It just slides in loose. If your housing is too short between the shifter and a stop, or the RD, it will slide out as you shift though.
