The SLR, like the Allhallows-on-Sea branch and the Lydd-New Romney realignment, was an attempt to encourage resort development on the Kent coast. All soon failed, though Sheppey has a downmarket tourist trade of sorts.
It is worth remembering that on the rare occasion a tender locomotive was used on the line, when running tender first a speed limit of 10 MPH was mandatory
