I scratched up my aluminum bike pretty badly yesterday. I packed it in a bike box for a trip, and the frame was up against the gears on my rear wheel, scratching it up pretty badly. Think it’s safe to ride?
go get some paint and cover it up, youll forget about it in a week. i use acrylic paint.

Find some matching nail polish and call it good

If it were carbon it *might* be an problem, but with aluminum I see no reason at all why that would be a safety issue.

Just stop grinding on curbs and buildings and you’ll be alright.

Actually, I’m a little less optimistic about this one, compared to everyone else.
Were there metal shavings in the box, or stuck to the cassette?
That doesn’t just look like missing paint. It looks like the aluminum has been pretty badly gouged up by the cassette teeth. I’d go get it checked over and make sure there’s no stress points where fractures can begin, or thin places that feel dead.

Yeah, it’s safe. Down tubes are under a tension force. Some “interesting” bikes of the past even have a cable where the down tube would usually be.
