    If it were carbon it *might* be an problem, but with aluminum I see no reason at all why that would be a safety issue.

  5. Actually, I’m a little less optimistic about this one, compared to everyone else.

    Were there metal shavings in the box, or stuck to the cassette?

    That doesn’t just look like missing paint. It looks like the aluminum has been pretty badly gouged up by the cassette teeth. I’d go get it checked over and make sure there’s no stress points where fractures can begin, or thin places that feel dead.

    no not safe you should give it away for a hobbiest just like quick echidna.

    Yeah, it’s safe. Down tubes are under a tension force. Some “interesting” bikes of the past even have a cable where the down tube would usually be.
