


Bought this stem and noticed some of the clear coat and possibly top layers of carbon deliminating/peeling around the rim of the steerer (not really too familiar with fabrication with carbon fiber if you couldn’t tell). Not sure at what point the stem is compromised.

I would stop using it if it’s from Amazon, eBay, or one of the Chinese sites..
The visible outer weave of carbon is cosmetic. That wouldn’t bother me.

This is an aluminum stem coated with carbon. The process has a fancy marketable name; “Carbon Structural Integration (CSI)”. It’s meant to reduce weight and/or increase stiffness a bit while avoiding the hard task of making the core structure out of carbon weave.
They’re easy and profitable to fake. Yours even has tiny air bubbles in the resin above the weave.
