Can anyone tell me whether this Italian-made Austrian bike (Puch Mistral Equipe ca. 1987) has an ITA or BSA bottom bracket? I’d like to know before I subject it to inhuman amounts of torque in the wrong direction.

I suspect it’s Italian since the derailleurs are Campy and the cranks are Gipiemme. Frame made in Italy too.

The left side is going to be RH threads in any case. You could take it off and see if the diameter is 34.8 mm (English) or 36mm (Italian). You could even do a test fit with a cup of known diameter. English cups will be very loose in an Italian shell.
And if there is no need to replace, you can do the overhaul while leaving the fixed cup in place.

And measure the width of the BB she’ll.
Italian – 70mm
British Standard – 68mm
Use this as another marker, not 100% definitive

Typically the threading is engraved on the cup. 36x24f is Italian, 1.37x24tpi is English.

It also needs a saddle.
