I’m on a trip in Iceland at the moment and I stumbled upon this very uh… unique bike lane. Why does this even existed and what was going through their minds when building this infrastructure. Seriously, it only last about 20 meters and that’s it!

It even has a nice little bike rack.
I’m mad that as an American my first thought was “oh this looks nice. What a wide bike lane- and that grate is pretty small and unobtrusive, definitely wouldn’t get my wheel stuck in that”
I need to visit other countries.
I especially like the tire trap at the end of it.
Imagine at night!
I see things like this in the USA. I think that building codes in some areas require a bike lane, so for new construction, they just paint a stripe in front of the building and then it disappears.
It is not contiguous and it is not separated from cars, so it adds no public benefit other than checking a box on a government checklist.
The city would have been better off putting the money that that “bike lane” cost into a fund that they could eventually use to create safe and contiguous routes.
