A journey from Andover to Southampton following the route of the old canal, which became the Spratt and Winkle railway line. Today much of the old pathway can be walked or cycled. I explore what’s left, and delve into the history behind it.
Your trip towards Westover Farm at Clatford fell short.. a word with the keeper in advance might have brought permission to visit the cut off section of canal there.. and had you hopped over the bridge from Leckford to Longstock, you would see part of the canal kept by the now John Lewis estate as a fishery.. and by the John OโGaunt at Horsebridge you can follow the canal bed through the remains of Chalkhill lock..
Great stuff again, love the animated maps which show the routes so well. Re the "small" railways, e.g. Fullerton to Whitchurch, not all were built for traffic and revenue but as ways to "defeat" the opposition, there was no love lost between the LSWR & the GWR! Queen Victoria did indeed travel via this route, reportedly she hated the tunnels between Basingstoke & Winchester! She also refused to travel through Portsmouth which she thought had "disrepected" her which was why her body was returned to London via Gosport!
