I think of myself as a low level intermediate rider. I started riding in Feb this year on a Specialized Stumpjumper Alloy that I have upgraded significantly thru a few good deals.

I typically ride intermediate trails and the occasional black. I feel pretty confident riding any intermediate downhill and struggle climbing harder intermediate trails, on black diamonds I can struggle but make it down tougher technical sections and walk most double black sections, uphill I struggle a lot on blacks.

Today I rode a black/double black and struggled enough that I was happy to finish but didn’t enjoy the ride overall.

So how much difficulty do you push on your skill level and how much do you ride in your comfort zones?

  1. I agree that having to be “on” for a long time can help improve skills but it can make for an intense experience. Portal and Lower Porcupine was like that for me – yes I’m challenging myself but damn can I get a break? I had a ton of fun on Navajo Rocks – the intermediate trail. Interesting enough to be fun but not the huge consequences of messing up so a lot less stressful.

Nice I rode Estrella today. I’m on one of those trails every weekend. Where do you find these trail ratings at (black/double black) ?
