What happens when a bike ride becomes an endless sequence of islands, bridges and ferries?
We set off from Turku, Finland, to ride the Archipelago Trail: a 230-kilometre loop connecting 28 islands across one of the largest archipelagos in the Baltic Sea. Over five days, the road repeatedly disappears into the sea, only to continue on the other side aboard a ferry.
There is no rush here. The timetable is dictated less by distance than by the next crossing, while the landscape constantly shifts between forests, farmland, villages and open water. We ride through large islands that barely feel like islands, tiny communities crossed by a single road, and stretches where the sea seems to become the landscape itself.
With almost endless summer daylight, sparse traffic and a rhythm of ride, ferry, island, repeat, this is less a cycling challenge than a journey through a peculiar geography—and a very Finnish way of travelling through it.
28 islands. Countless crossings. Five days. One loop, starting and ending in Turku.
Hop on. Hop off.

I agree, Finland is an easy going happy country. And i say this living in Spain which is not that stressful too. Cycling is a perfect way to see why Finland has this feature. Thank you for sharing
Would you recommend a gravel bike for ride like this, or would a road bike with 28 mm tires suffice?
