Anyone have advice on avoiding and repairing rear blow outs roadside?

First complete failure. Tube blew and went off like a gunshot. Can’t see anything in the tyre but will inspect on repair.

Had to walk back and swap to a walking commute. 😔

I carry a mini pump and tool set. Not got a complete tube spare though .. getting one tomorrow

  1. Doesnt take too many tools. Good idea to watch online video from Brompton if you havent done before.

  2. I’ll get some hate for this, but…

Marathon Plus tyres. Yeah, they get a lot of hate. But I can absolutely attest to their puncture resistance. The number of punctures I’ve had on these tyres is lower than the number of marathon plus tyres I’ve worn out over 14 years of riding my bromptons.

But check the problem isn’t internal – check your rim tape is intact and no metal swarf from the spoke holes is nearby. If it went “bang” I wonder if the rimtape failed.

I guess you have had low pressure and cycled with that. Then you got correct pressure. On low pressure your tire got very small hole, where you tube pushed through and eventually exploded

  4. If you notice no puncture holes from the tire side and you’re still running on the low quality stock yellow rim tape that the bike comes with, replace it with a better rimtape. (quite often the case)

Otherwise keep your tires adequately pumped up to 90 & 100psi front & rear respectively. 1-2 times a month is how often I normally pump, but you can also consider pumping every ride for higher efficiency.

The stock Continental Contact tires still offers decent puncture resistance, replacing it to the slower Marathons may be worthwhile but it will introduce a lot of rolling resistance.

  5. Sadly these are the tyres on the new deliveries in the UK at the moment. I will be changing to marathon shortly!

Only put about 400miles on it in the past two months. It’s brand new and still shiny. Replaced my older c line.

Will be off for a service and likely tube and tyre swap later. Curious if its swarf or a manufacture issue if theres no puncture.
