Alpe Adria Cycle Route Vlog Series: Is this the best bike route in Europe? Stage 1

Hello hello! 🚴

What happens when you start a 410 km cycling adventure across the Alps with almost no plan, a bike that keeps giving you problems, and barely any sleep?

Welcome to my first day on the Alpe-Adria Cycle Route, cycling from Salzburg, Austria, towards Grado, Italy, through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe.

This adventure started before I even got on my bike. My train from Munich was delayed, I arrived in Salzburg around 1:30 AM, and I couldn’t find affordable accommodation. So I spent the night in the train station waiting area. I barely slept, but by 6 AM I was already out exploring and preparing for the journey.

In this travel vlog, you’ll follow my first cycling stage through Austria, from Salzburg towards Bischofshofen, before I continue to St. Johann to find a campsite for the night.

🌄 WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS VLOG?
• Travelling from Munich to Salzburg with my Deutschlandticket
• Spending an almost sleepless night at Salzburg train station
• Starting the Alpe-Adria cycling adventure
• My first cycling struggles, including an uncomfortable saddle and faulty gears
• Beautiful Alpine landscapes, villages and mountain views
• Finding cheap food at a supermarket and sharing the prices
• Following the cycle route signs and dealing with road closures
• Climbing hills, walking when necessary, and using gummy bears for energy
• Completing around 60 km in approximately 5 hours
• Camping for the first time on this adventure and sharing the costs

💶 MY FIRST-DAY COSTS
• Campsite and tent: €20
• Shower: €1 for 6 minutes
• Food: prices shown throughout the video

I didn’t have a proper sleeping bag, so I improvised with some sofa cushions and an emergency blanket. It wasn’t luxury, but I was grateful to have a place to rest after such a demanding day.

🚴 ABOUT THE ALPE-ADRIA CYCLE ROUTE

The Alpe-Adria Cycle Route connects Salzburg in Austria with Grado on the Adriatic coast of Italy. It covers roughly 410 to 415 km, depending on the route version, and is commonly divided into eight stages.

You don’t have to be an experienced cyclist to dream about an adventure like this. I’m sharing the real experience, including the difficult parts, the mistakes, the costs and the moments that make it worthwhile.

This is only the beginning! In the next vlog, I’ll continue cycling through Austria and discover what the next stage has in store.
