Of course the gap between a 1-in tire and a 2-in tire, or a two-in and a three is very noticeable. Will I notice the same difference between a four and a five?
You’ll probably only notice a difference (and need a 5″) tire if you are riding on loose snow.
I usually ride 26×4.8 but last year tried 4.3 in the rear. It was faster and perfect on packed down / groomed trails but when there was more than a couple inches of fresh snow on top of the packed down base, I was digging in and having a hard time floating.
With 4.8 and aired down to like 1 psi I can float on/ride on loose snow almost to the bottom bracket.
