We thought we were starting to understand Poland but……

Continuing our 11-week motorhome travels around Poland, we head deeper into the east of the country and discover a side of Poland we really weren’t expecting.

Our journey takes us from a remarkable church connected to Pope John Paul II, into Augustów where we uncover the disturbing story of the Augustów Roundup and the hundreds of people who disappeared without trace.

From there the weather takes a dramatic turn. What starts as another drive through the rural Polish countryside quickly becomes one of the worst storms we’ve encountered on the road, with fallen trees and debris bringing our journey to a halt.

But our final destination couldn’t be more different.

Hidden amongst the forest at Grabarka — Poland’s Holy Mountain, are thousands upon thousands of wooden crosses, carried here by pilgrims over generations. It’s one of the most unusual and memorable places we’ve visited during our travels through Poland.

Poland keeps surprising us and just when we think we’ve got it figured out, it shows us something completely different.

Would you have known this place existed? And would Grabarka be somewhere you’d visit? Let us know in the comments.

Join us as we continue our motorhome journey around Poland, exploring the famous places and the ones we’d never even heard of.

  1. So, a question for the few people who actually read pinned comments:
What surprised you most in this one — the history, the A list celebrity, Grabarka, or the fact we actually made it through that storm? 😂

  2. Well, I suppose the fact you survied the storm!!! looked terrible. But having said that, we are actually genuinely scared right now. We are in Nordkapp and have been having a horrendous storm ourselves.
Poland does seem to be really religious.

  3. Finding these rural locations have been amazing. It just goes to show there’s so much more to discover when you venture away from the usual tourist spots 😍 . The museum certainly taught us a lot more about Poland after the war. While the West was celebrating peace, Poland and much of Eastern Europe were entering another difficult chapter under communism 😪. And then seeing the thousands of crosses at Grabarka, each one carrying somebody’s own story, hope or prayer, it was incredibly moving. Poland’s history has certainly given us plenty to think about. There are lessons in resilience, remembrance and never taking freedom for granted. 🇵🇱❤️
