Illegal e-bike caught by police in London. The UK legal limit is 15.5mph, and this one hit 54 on the tester 😳

The bike’s getting crushed, and the rider’s getting nine points on his driving licence.

A lot of people don’t realise how strict the rules are. A legal e-bike has a motor of 250W or less, and the motor has to stop helping at 15.5mph. Anything faster counts as a motor vehicle, so you need a licence, insurance and plates. Without them, you can lose the bike and get points.

I ride e-bikes every day, so I want people to know the rules before this happens to them.

So what do you reckon? Fair, or too harsh? 👇

  1. Fair, my 1200 Bandit (MK1 by the way) has to be insured and taxed for the road, I had to take a test, now more than one part, any idiot can get on one of these things and cause havoc, and they can be altered to go faster. One day I'm going to put my licence to the test and ride on and off the pavements as lots of the folk that ride these do, difference is I can ride (advanced in car and motorcycle) Also I've yet to see all these riders wearing helmets! It's still a motorised vehicle and should be insured, licensed and taxed as such! Just saying, ride safe all.

  2. Anyone else notice an issue with the methodology??

Yes it may go 56 while standing next to it on full throttle, but how fast is it with WEIGHT on it

As that is how it would be ridden

Easy to overturn with good lawyers

  3. I cant believe the number of people on here defending these arseholes.
They are a menace on the roads, act like they own it, constantly pulling illegal moves, no protective equipment most of the time, no registration, no insurance and some T wat with an attitude usually on back of it.
I think a harsher punishment. Fine the parents big upwqrds of 10k, points on licence they probably dont have yet is not punishment. Its like banning an already banned driver – they already demonstrated they dont care for the law.

  4. So many jobsworths on here they make cars that go 100+ miles and hour and the speed limit is 70 plus 10% in the uk e bikes are far safer than 1000cc motorbike .. at the end of the day all vehicles are dangerous I don’t think anyone bar the police intentionally crashes their vehicles.. e-bikes get allot of attention granted but I can quite easily peddle 25+ mph on my pedal bike why is the speed limit so low on e-bikes and as for safety clothing I think that’s upto people what they want to wear. I see people in shorts and T-shirt doing 100+ on motorbikes. If they don’t care for their safety just let them get on with it. Get a life people

  5. The post here is not really about the bikes ability, it's about the riders lack of proven ability and legal standing. You can register these for the road and get registration plates and insurance and you need a motorcycle licence.

  6. Best thing for them. Crush the lot,,,,,,why should people have to do a CBT, have to have tax insurance, MOT the appropriate crash helmet and only allowed to do 30mph when the ebikes piss along at 40+ with no license, insurance or road sense
