Stockport has been ‘flying high’ recently! Development has been moving fast: new apartments, new roads, a new transport interchange, and lots more planned, including a huge upgrade for Stockport railway station and the Metrolink expansion to Stockport town centre.

Climbing aboard the @Cinemaker drone we’ll take a flight along the five mile route that, I believe, Metrolink trams will take between East Didsbury, the current end of the line, and Stockport.

I mention the Cyanlines project, which has not yet reached Stockport. It is planned to develop paths for people on foot or on wheels across the Greater Manchester conurbation

We’ll go for a walk around the area west of Stockport Railway Viaduct that’s being transformed from a former industrial area into a residential district.

I have good local knowledge as I grew up in the Cheadle Heath and Edgeley district of Stockport and was fascinated by my local area even as a five-year-old! I have a personal interest in how modern urban planning shapes the place we live in.

I didn’t mention the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, but I’ll look at that in more detail in another video.

  1. Another video is ready, 19 minutes long, I think this is my longest video ever. I try to aim for 10 minutes but didn't manage it!. +++Error message London Midland should be Midland+++ The video was delayed due to illness in the family. Many thanks for watching and remember all answers to comment are written by me, not "AI"-generated and are marked thus ⚜ Many thanks to my channel members who have already watched the video – it was online on Friday for them.

  2. Interesting video. The route stated in your video would be the best solution. Hopefully it gets the go ahead as it serves thousands in Heaton Mersey, Cheadle Heath, Edgeley, Adswood and Shaw Heath.

  3. Welcome back. Very much enjoyed that. Love Weir Mill. Capital and Centric' have done a fine job. Will you be marking Medlock Square at any part? I'd be interested to know what you think of it.

  4. They've really transformed the viaduct area of Stockport into a desirable area to live in, work in, and commute from. That Cinemaker footage and your explanation really put into focus how much planning and work it requires to add a tram line to a city. It really is a shame the old lines and/or right of ways weren't retained.

  5. Your speculation about the route that the tram route extension is fascinating. It would certainly serve more residents than the possible other route via Brinksway and the Aurora Business park.
You rather skate over the problem of the shared tram train route near to the Reservoir station – surely this might be the opportunity to a introduce Tram/Train routing.
Either of these alternatives would be very expensive and I wonder how many people would travel into Manchester from Stockport when the existing trains run every few minutes and take just 10 minutes? Of course both routes will provide better links from Stockport to Chorlton.
It's a shame that you don't extend your discussion to the possibility of a tram/train route starting at Heaton Norris along the goods line + Ghost Train towards Ashton and the existing tram line between Ashton and Piccadilly. This would serve a great deal more people with extra intermediate stops at Broadstone Hall Road South, Mill Lane, Dane Bank and Audenshaw – along with Reddish South and Denton.
I would guess that this would serve many more residents than either of the East Didsbury extension routes at much less cost – definitely no motorway or Mersey bridges required!

  6. The tram to Stockport is in planning for nearly 30 years! I saved at one point a detailed plan where they should run and tram stops. But it is ridiculous how long it takes to build that simple and important extension.

  7. What a pity the view and integrity of the Viaduct has been ruinned by building in front of it and interrupting the panoramic flow.
No other country would do that just sheety Britain.

  8. Most of the information for the various metrolink plans (and I say various as this has been discussed for decades) suggest East Didsbury – Stockport.
While I can see the logic of it. I think a quicker win would be to look at utilising the line to Stalybridge. Currently used by 1 train a week, thousands in Reddish, Denton etc are effectively without a train. Busses from Stockport to Ashton currently take around 1hr. The Metrolink would be a huge improvement and most of the infrastructure in terms of track, stations etc is already there. No need for street running.

  9. I believe the Metrolink network now needs an orbital line, to link up the “spokes of the wheel.” If you wanted to travel from Altrincham to the airport (which is quite close) you currently have to travel nearly all the way into the city centre before you are able to access the airport line.

  10. Development, any development, is welcome. For the last 30+ years one after another gov in London have neglected, deceived and cheated the North from investment and development. It is a scandal that they treat the North like part of an enemy country!
