Today, I tried cutting my bike’s fork. I didn’t cut it to the final length, so if I messed up, I could still give it another try, before doing the final cut.

Would it be safe to ride this way, or did I cut it too short?

Edit: Sorry, I think I didn’t explain myself correctly. I would never ride the bike like that, without the top cap and tightening the screws.

It’s just about the length of the fork in relation to the stem. I was worried that I might have cut it a little too short, for the stem to engage properly.

  1. I guess why did you cut it? Just reduced resale value. But yes you can use it like that. You’re usually better going about 5mm too long and put one spacer on the top for the cap to compress

  2. That looks about as final of a cut for this bike as can be. Also why is your stem cap not sitting on top of your stem? That is a more urgent issue to fix here

  3. Normally it would be enough to stay a couple of mm under the stem´s edge to allow to build tension.
What you did *might* be still OK, but it´s less than optimal in my opinion.

Once you are dove, don´t forget to seal the cut surface with cyanoacrylate glue to be on the safe side.
