The transformation of M3 Junction 9 near Winchester is one of the largest highway improvement projects currently underway in southern England.

Using aerial drone footage, this video explores the new junction layout and demonstrates how traffic is expected to flow once construction is fully completed. The project aims to improve journey reliability, reduce congestion and provide better connections between the M3, A34, and local road network around Winchester.

⚠️ Important Disclaimer: This is not an official National Highways video. The route explanations and traffic movements shown are my own observations and best estimate of how the completed junction will operate based on visible construction progress, published information and site observations. Final road layouts, traffic movements and signage may differ when the project officially opens.

Project Background

The M3 Junction 9 improvement scheme is designed to address one of the South’s busiest transport bottlenecks where long-distance traffic travelling between the Midlands, the South Coast and London converges.

The upgrade includes:

✅ New free-flow connections

✅ Major reconstruction of junction approaches

✅ New bridges and structures

✅ Improved traffic capacity

✅ Better separation of local and strategic traffic

✅ Enhanced cycling and walking provision

The junction serves as a key gateway to Winchester and forms a critical connection between the M3 motorway and the A34 trunk road.

  1. This video is not affiliated with National Highways and should not be treated as an official guide to using the junction. The traffic movements shown are my best estimate based on the current construction progress and publicly available information. Final layouts and traffic arrangements may change before opening.

  2. Great shots and overlays.

Appreciate the effort, and allows the progress to be seen without having to mess with the traffic.

    A couple of notes:

At 1:20 – 2:00 New Route is from the A33S to A34N, A272, M3S and Easton Road (almost the full loop, not shown).

    At 3:13 – 4:28 From M3S also includes A34S If you don't want M3S.

  3. great stuff but… I think you have the entrances to M3 North incorrect. That connection is further north. What was the line of the original slip road from the junction to M3N will lead to A34 N, connecting with the new, much longer Slip from M3N to A34.

  4. Excellent work on this one. The aerial footage already gives a great overview of how massive the Junction 9 project is, but adding the colour-coded route overlays makes the new layout so much easier to understand. I also appreciated that you clearly explained which parts are your own best estimate rather than an official guide. A very informative and well put together video. 👍🚁
