  1. Fun fact:
Despite the fact that alcohol is obviously a central nervous system depressant, not a stimulant, when official anti-doping regulations were first drafted in the 1960s, alcohol was grouped under the broad umbrella of banned "performance-enhancing stimulants" because of how athletes used it.

Alcohol reduces inhibitions, dulls the perception of pain, and provides a temporary rush of confidence and because it masked exhaustion and allowed riders to push past their physical limits, early twentieth-century sports culture viewed and classified it alongside actual stimulants like cocaine.

  2. Partially a lot of sports in the modern day are kind of we’re all adults here, gay! Football a bunch of men running around in tights so they can feel up on each other. Basketball, the same old boring I got the ball now I’m gonna go this way, but I got the ball. I’m gonna go this way.

I never thought cycling would be entertaining! Usually it needs more horsepower, but if we’re stopping randomly doing stuff like this. I’m here for it.

  3. Fun fact, in one of the Early TdF's a rider broke his bicycle's fork, ran down a mountain to a nearby village and used the Smithy to repair it himself. Then got Disqualified by Desgranges since the Apprentice blacksmith operated the bellows.

    Desgranges was a dick

  4. Might as well get drunk and win the Tour de France, eh? But I guess in the 1930s the medical knowledge weren't up there yet. Drinking alcohol during an extreme sport like cycling is dangerous because it impairs coordination, accelerates dehydration, and severely slows reaction times.
So, I was like "Huh!? Why not just water or some juice or something? Why alcohol?"
