In this video, I go on a requested trip by an out of town viewer who will be visiting the area in the Spring. I start out at the Prince George Hotel in Downtown Halifax and make my way to the 5k Café in Bayers Lake using a combination of bike lanes, multi-use paths, and low-traffic streets.

I usually take the most direct route to get to the chain of lake trail but this was great to see there is a safer way to navigate through the Bayers Rd/Joseph Howe area that doesn’t include having to keep up with traffic on Connaught and Mumford. Love your videos, thank you!
What kind of bike do you use? Any tips for selecting a bike that’s suitable for Halifax commuting? Do you use an e-bike? I don’t think I could tackle the hills on the peninsula without a motor assist lol.
hey this came up on my feed, what would you reccomend for someone who want to learn about how to ride a bile in this city? I don't really remember learning about mode filters in driving school, and this looks a little intimidating to try right now.
I love to see so many people out walking on that somewhat out-of-the-way part of the rail trail. I suppose in part, a rare sunny day in spring will have that effect.
That bridge at 5:35 (Bayer's road / Circ inbound over the train) is my least favorite piece of active transportation infrastructure in the city. When the traffic is light, you can get car coming in a basically highway speed, separated from you by nothing more than a crumbling curb and faith in their good driving skills.
There's a lot of overlap between this and the Scotia Square/Timberlea bike commute I want to try someday soon, so thanks so much for this!
Thanks for filming this – awesome. I hope the people of Halifax ( or people coming to visit) know how lucky they are to have you doing this. Fantastic!!!!
Couple of questions as I'm trying to process how to upload the ride to my garmin. 1) Do you have a gpx file of the ride that you would be willing to share with me? 2) Are you on strava?
Thanks again Scott
Love the video! I'll note a few things based on experience commuting this route: the straight through bike-only at Oxford is a rule often broken by cars which makes them unpredictable – be careful not to get sideswiped. Several crossing guards have told us that the Bayers mall intersection is a forced dismount and been very firm about it. The narrow multi-use after Connaught I usually walk the end because the vegetation means you can't see if there is a pedestrian on the sidewalk right beside you when you exit. Be careful around the school on George Dauphine, high risk of being doored during school transition hours. The Bayers hill is fun downhill (wee!) but mind the bus stop in the middle of the steep part – folks will dismount and fill both sides without looking and I've had to make some sudden stops. The Chain of Lakes is fantastic but technically the golf course road is a "bikes yeild to cars" (yikes) and it's all forced dismount for every road crossing. Hfx is also super vague in general about forced dismount – some will say every intersection is one.
I’m wondering if the Almon Street bike lane was open when you made this trip. If it was, would you consider avoiding the Commons and instead going up Agricola to Almon?
