Years ago Osprey used to have a helmet attachment on their bags called LidLock and it was amazingly elegant. I’ve copied it for my helmet using a women’s hair Barret and some elastic (recommend thick elastic). Now my helmet stays tight to my bag. For those of you with bigger helmet ventilation holes, I think you can use a woman’s large hair clip/Barrett and break the back off. They come in all different sizes.

I’ve had so many helmets fall out of external straps on bags. It just doesn’t work.

My helmet
I have the cloaca helmet which is meant to have won a design prize.

The collapsibility means I carry it everywhere. But it’s so terribly designed in every other way. The reflection is coming off after 6 months. There’s no decent way to attach it to anything. The strap around the chin is being held up by a garbage plastic loop and it breaks easily.

The small ventilation holes are great for me as a woman with styled hair. I can tuck my hair into the helmet and the helmet acts like a shower cap against the elements.

Tldr: use some elastic and a hair Barret to create a stretchy attachment that attachs your helmet tight to whatever bag you have.

  1. I don’t get carrying helmets around when you can just thread your lock through the chinstrap. In addition to being inconvenient, carrying your helmet around greatly increases the risk of dropping it (as you’ve noticed) and thereby compromising its one and only function of protecting your head.
