That’s a SRAM XD drive that came out of the housing on the wheel. If you don’t have the tools, take it to a bike shop. Around $200 samolis. It has to be serviced at least 2x a year if you ride a lot. That one has not.

Actually, it is! Get all the funk out behind the cassette and lube the pawls, too!

aside from the rust looks normal enough

What model of hub is it? Once it’s cleaned up to see if the drive ring is okay you can probably get away with just an axle and pawls, but the gouges in the hub body will need cleaned up (filed, sanded or dremelled) before it goes back together and if there’s a seal that’s supposed to go there it likely won’t do as good a job as it used to

Dude, your axle is broke.

The axle isn’t even in the picture. It’s a thru axle. This is the driver that turns the wheel. Go to SRAM.com

Same thing happened to my Stan’s. They sent me all new parts and sealant, tape. Pretty cool

You running an ebike?
I’ve been eating hope freehub pawls after a few rides. Just not up to the task.
I’ve swapped to DT swiss style ratchet hubs and its resolved the issues I’ve seen.

The cassette (gears) thread onto the XD drive. The AXEL goes through the frame (non drive side) through the wheel, through the XD driver through the cassette and threads into the frame.
