To introduce myself shortly. I'm Marc, a German guy traveling the world by bike since August 2021. I just passed my 5 years anniversary on the road.
Don’t ask me how many more years are to come. I don’t know.
So many memories and experiences — so many ups and downs. Over the past few years, I’ve gone through it all — from “I’d love to just throw my bike into the nearest ditch and quit” to “I could keep doing this forever.”
It hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve found my own ways to deal with the challenges along the way — and yet I’ve kept riding on and on. 😁
I’ve learned a lot — about myself, about the world. And also how crazy and stupid it actually is to travel the world by bike. 😉
The good news: You’ll still be seeing me on the roads of this world for a while — whether they’re paved roads, gravel paths, or muddy trails.

What do you do with life’s collected things – certificates / qualifications / photos of loved ones now deceased?
– I appreciate things can be scanned, and favourite book covers and fav shirts photographed before giving away.
How do you fund this 5 year+ journey?
I have once, as a younger man, cycled for 5 months, much to my father’s annoyance, but returned to my parents home. This is not an option now.

I want to do something like this, and the main concern is money. I hope you don’t mind me asking:
Did you already have 23,000 euros saved up, or have you made some money along the way?
Do you have more money saved, enough for another 5-10 years?
Do you ever wish you could spend more? Has your budget prevented you from doing things you wanted, or made it considerably harder?
What did most of the money get spent on? Food? Lodging? Flights/trains between desirable locations? Gear? Clothing?

First of all, amazing, what a dream this is! During the 5 years, did you go back home to see family/friends for important events? And how did you finance the trip? Did you save the money beforehand or worked along the way? Last one, what bike are you riding??? Explain some of your gear!

Where would you not want to return to and why?
With 5 hrs average on the bike everyday (edit : ok not every single day) for years, how’s the butt holding up? 😁
After 8 days it’s over for me. I do generally longer days 10-12 hrs but I also have 2 saddles and even swapping doesn’t help at a certain point…
Also, what route planner do you use? Default komoot or just your nose and roadsigns?
How are you seen as a German guy on a bike? Got into trouble with locals? Are you not afraid of getting robbed or anything?
This is one of the most inspiring post I have seen for a long time. It is about 8am, time to go to the office and sit behind my desk. Sigh…
How do you fund your travels? Do you have any sponsors, patreon, maybe get donations from friendly people you meet during your tour? Generate any money from social media?
I’m thinking about doing the same thing… just going for it til the money runs out but hoping to be able to generate enough income from content creation and donations… of course while touring in a frugal/modest fashion.

If I might ask, how will integrate back into “normal” society, if you are planning to? That for me would be the hardest part, I think.

I know it’s a bit bad manners (at least for a Dane like me), but how is this lifestyle funded? I know it’s obviously a very low cost lifestyle, but the money still has to come from somewhere.

Props to you, but I am not sure I would want to be permanently bike touring. I love doing it in my free time, but it makes me appreciate the creature comforts of home even more when it is over.
