Summer 2025 is already a distant memory. It’s October, the nights are closing in, and with the clocks about to change, it feels like the perfect time to squeeze in one more bikepacking trip before winter takes hold.

I chose the new Royal Chilterns Way — a route I’d never ridden before — and wow. What struck me most were the woodlands. Endless, towering, peaceful forests… and plenty of quiet trails where you feel miles away from everything. Lots of spots for a discreet wild camp and plenty of solitude.

It’s not the hardest route, but definitely not easy either — a good, honest middle ground with a decent amount of climbing.

The “official” route starts in Reading, but I kicked things off from the northern point in Dunstable after work on a Friday. The first evening was short on miles but big on atmosphere — rolling into pitch-black woods and settling in for the night.

Saturday was a big day on the pedals; somehow the miles didn’t add up as quickly as expected — classic Chilterns lumpy terrain. By Sunday the temperature dropped, layers came out, and eventually I rolled back toward Dunstable where I began.

A quiet, challenging, rewarding loop. Autumn colours, cold mornings, crunchy leaves, and deep woods — exactly what a late-season overnighter should be. 🌲🚴‍♂️🍂

  1. Gotta love the Chilterns! But your sleep system made me feel very cold lol. Not sure I could have slept with so little warmth. Thanks for the video, and I hope the journey home wasn't too bad

  2. Thanks for this, great stuff! I rode the section between Wendover and Dunstable just after the route was made available and would totally agree, a mountain bike would make for a much easier journey.

  3. Thanks for another great video , Regarding cycling UK routes ,In my opinion the books are an interesting read but in practice they could learn a lot from Cicerone ,their books are just the size to take with you ,you could navigate just from the book ,the maps are clear etc .

  4. I did some of it on my way to Lyme Regis on the Ridgeway, I did it on my Curve GMX (off road gravel adventure bike) which has mountain bike gears and 29×2.25 tyres I was heavier loaded but then l was heading to lands end to start the GB divide. Coming from Cambridge and cycling mostly in Cambridgeshire / Suffolk , the hills were hard going.

  5. So did you go in a big circle to end up back at your car ? I love woods but not fit enough yet to do that route but will definitely keep it in mind. Can I ask how you planed your route as I’m new to this? Yes I think I would definitely use my mountain bike, any way my other bike is strictly road .

  6. Wow I discovered your channel. I really like it. Autumn is the best. I have a channel about bikepacking routes in Spain. In case you may like it. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Suscribed!
