  1. In my youth I spent a decade of my annual leave doing conservation work within the National Park. Tough messy work in beautiful surroundings. However on Saturdays we would do the tourist thing and explore what the place had to offer and one of our favourites was to take a boat trip up thru the lakes to Lord Brandon's cottage and walk back via the Gap of Dungloe and a bus back to the town. We always enjoyed listening to one of the local boatmen telling us about the history of the lakes and smiled when he told us that the first potatoes grown in Ireland where planted on one of the small islands on Lough Leane. He said with a straight face "they took six months to grow and three months to boil"
