For context: last year I weighed around 420lbs and couldn’t even get on a bike – now I’m under 120kg and riding almost every day. Before anyone asks, no I didn’t just ride bikes to lose weight, I had a gastric bypass.
This is my first manual bike as an adult, was super worried about the drop down into road bike style handles but so far it’s been great.
I moved to canyon from an Estarli e bike, so again was really worried about the impact on my legs or the difficulty I might have riding. I will say it’s been a huge amount easier than I first pictured, I basically get from my home in south London to my office in Aldgate within 30 mins. A bit of an improvement on the timing I had on my ebike which is super interesting.
For anyone contemplating either a move from a straight handlebar or e bike I’d highly encourage you go for it, really feels good to know the only reason my bike might not get me home is because of my own legs and not a dead battery!

Congrats, great health wins and enjoying yourself in a bike is a win in its own right!

I get this thing when on a bike (on a drop bar road / gravel bike, not so much on an MTB) where I just want to push with my legs and see it go. It is not even about speed, just the feeling of the bike respond to my effort. If that is happening, that would indeed naturally make you quicker than cruising on an e-bike!
