In 2006, Floyd Landis produced one of the most extraordinary rides in Tour de France history — attacking from 130km out, crossing five Alpine climbs alone and clawing back almost eight minutes on his rivals. Days later, he was crowned Tour champion. Then came the positive test that changed everything. This episode looks beyond the infamous comeback to the tactics, cooling strategy and doping controversy behind it, before tracing how Landis’ downfall ultimately helped expose Lance Armstrong and one of the biggest scandals professional cycling has ever seen.

bro you are obsessed with doping
Intriguing. Nice one.
….good job…..sports should be noble and honorable…..and most of the time they are…..cheating to 'win' is an abomination…..seems like too much money gets involved and corruption flowers……bullies threaten other people….that's a part of their shame, in my book…..I'm not here to hate on anyone, but the cheaters must be exposed……and more important, the athletes, the competitors and their teams, the sport itself, needs to be honored……humanity needs good examples of how to live………
Floyd's engine was running hot that day.
I’m shocked to see someone as intelligent, analytical and evidence-based plugging AG1 (and apparently taking it- though presumably for free, I can’t imagine you’d waste your own money on it). Colour me disappointed.
GDR scientists wrote in the early 1980s that testosterone had a nootropic effect, ergo it was a stimulant albeit not clear how effective one.
It is interesting that Tyler Hamilton has also admitted pretty much everything about his doping program but maintains that he wasn't intentionally guilty of transfusing someone else's blood, his initial positive in 2004 albeit it is very possible he intentionally did so.
Maybe it was that old PowerTap hub Floyd was using 🤔
Bier & Whyski! 😂 🤪😋 🧸👍
he has done more to hurt cycling in America than this. We need him to be one of us. to ride a bike. to be an advocate. to give back to tell it now that IT IS ABOUT TH E BIKE.
If you're a top sportsman/women, you do the same, that humans have done for thousands of years. Who cares, just enjoy the entertainment and forget the ethics.
Lance never got caught.
Very well researched video, thanks! Well narrated and editied.
good bit, you just told story of the biggest RAT in cycling history, one of the dummies that got caught. He is able to deny taking the T because the likely cause is took the 'wrong' blood bag that night, or one some clown did not properly run the tests on, or it was planted, could be any of the above, but likely the former. Two ironies. First you mention Op. Puerto, but you fail link that and blood transfusions to this case as a way 'honest' Floyd is able to 'technincally' deny taking the T because he likely took a contaminated bags. Then also ironic and says so much about the state of cycling no matter what they wriite or re-write, the de facto winner of that tour, 'baby face' Oscar Pereira, is one of the riders most often caught for cheating in the history of the sport. Scum bag kept riding on and on and on showing the filth that was and perhaps still is pro cycling.
“It took down the biggest name in the history of the sport” <— sorry dude, Armstrong is not now and wasn’t then “the biggest name in the history of the sport”. He was a one-trick pony who also happened to be a thug. Why are you always glorifying him?
fantastic
I remember a social media post asking what was the most important or influential stage of the tour de france in modern history a few years ago (maybe it was late 20-teena) and I answered stage 17 in 2006.
I got nothing but dozens of laugh reacts.
Great Story!!! It was the beginning of the end for American Cycling. But there's much more involved… Let's pick up the thread one day and I'll walk you through how the American Peloton element of it fits in, along with the 30,000 foot view of the business and media legacy companies that were involved and still made out like bandits while Lance took the fall and our culture in the great U.S. of A just dumped it all on him. That's the story that's never been told. One day buddy we'll tell it.
Didn’t Floyd ask Lance for a spot on his team, when Lance came back to the Tour? And didn’t Lance say no? And wasn’t it Lance saying no and not Floyd’s conscience that prompted Floyd’s confession and his exposure of the USPS team?
Did you get your money back?
I presume that many male athletes use testosterone. It won't be detected in a drug sample as long as, as you aptly mentioned, the athlete keeps T/E ratio below 4:1. So the story I heard is, again as you mentioned, that Landis was so despondent that he started drinking. Prior to that he had placed a testosterone patch on his body before getting hammered. Now athletes know how long they can leave the patch on and still be under the test limit. Problem is he passed out from the drinking and left the patch on for too long.
If Lance's wins are recognized by cycling fans as legitimate because everyone else was doping then Floyd Landis's win should be similarly recognized.
I've always chuckled at the notion that the USPS' reputation could be soiled by their association with Lance Armstrong.
Always wondered if the name "Floyd FAIRNESS Fund" was something of a tell…like he knew everyone else was cheating, and it wasn't fair that he was one of the few caught, penalized, and ostracized. Granted, it would not have had the same alliteration but note that it was not the "Floyd Justice Fund."
Floyd was a fake "man of God" .. so he lies all these years, cheats and was part of a sistem and than when Lance declined to take him into his team in 2009. (after Floyd got cought for doping in 2006.) suddenly he feels so guilty Infront of God and his loved ones that he rats out Lance and gets some money by doing it…. If you ask me,not to justify Lance by any means, Floyd turned out to be the biggest puss* and snitch in the end just because of jealousy, money and hurt feelings because Lance didn't take him into his team again…
Still the most amazing ride I ever witnessed.
Excellent, young man!
They tested everyone on the podium for years not positive. Lance was tested more. Why is the testing body not charged for falsifying their results? Ancient Proverb, "in a world where deceit is universal honesty would be a revolutionary act," George Orwell 1930. Things have gotten no better since that ancient time.
Greg LeMond is the GOAT of pro road cycling! Lance is an effin clown who brought himself down by, IMHO, his narcissism and arrogance.
I feel like you could become the voice of all cycling documentaries
Really great job story telling. Thanks.
Lance is still bigger than cycling…
…just look at the view counts on your videos.
I met Floyd here in Tucson. He seemed to be a really savvy business person and Floyd's of Leadville was a genius idea. However, lying about his use of EPDs is inexcusable. He's lucky to have walked away without life-long consequences.
As you stated, the testosterone use did not explain his incredible ride that day. Testosterone does not immediately enhance performance.
Landis appeared at a book store in Georgetown (Washington DC) to make that defense.. Saw it first hand! I wanted to believe him too.
I can't imagine having any pee to pee after a long hot ride like that
Iconic, yeah it was. I remember watching it!
We used to joke his family used him to pull the family wagon in PA.
Thanks, good coverage. Analysis works for the teams at 7:00 but a flub with "When Lance attacked…"
Sorry, but to me the most memorable and significant stage ever is when Marco Panatani attacked Jan Ulrich on stage 15 – Grenoble to Les Deux Alpes in the 1998 TdF. Not only did Pantani overcome a 3 minute deficit [and turn it into a 6-minute advantage]
