I have a mid/late 90s era Shimano RD-1056, med cage version, currently set up 8sp with an 11-28 cassette and 39/46 chainrings. I’m looking to go 9 sp with more range, and wondering if a 34t cog would be doable. I’m seeing some anecdotal evidence online that a 32 could work, curious if anyone has firsthand experience or more knowledge. I’ll be changing the crankset too but need to look through some secondhand options.

This is what I’m using with a 105 short cage. It works perfectly.
Have you looked at the specs on https://si.shimano.com/en/pdfs/si/52D0C/SI-52D0C-000-00-ENG.pdf
yeah, i’ve checked the specs, but they seem pretty conservative. i’ve heard of people pushing it further. anyone got firsthand experience?
