Some stems are designed asymmetric (one side is closed, the other has a gap), but by far most (including this one) are designed to have an even gap. Do this by loosening all bolts, then tightening each bolt in a criss-cross pattern only a 1/2 turn at a time so that the bolts are torqued evenly, which will be the same sized gap.
