To build a network you gotta start somewhere, but it would be easier by just removing car parking spots, have it 1-way only, widen footpaths and physically separated cycle lanes. I believe this was more of a "test" as it doesn't cause any negative impact.
If we start soending billons on cycle infrastructure… shouldn't there be a bicycle road tax?
better way to blow two and a half million. most of the cycle lanes here are dogsh*t and the cyclists still use the road while bus stops are shoved out into the middle. Problems are the morons designing them.
All very nice bu will the council replace the red tarmac when gas/water/electric services have to do repairs or maintenance or will it end up as a patchwork quilt?
It's a bloody eyesore and sure to have an adverse effect on the value of houses in the area, the money would have been better spent repairing the awful roads we pay "TAX" not road fund licence for.
Adams road was the local go to free parking road… Now its gone. And I know Juliette personally, so that made me laugh. Ill let you know what she thinks XD
People get uppity when they hear figures like "£2.4 million"… that's NOTHING nowadays. A drop in the ocean.
Should they have painted it green? or would that be too obvious? 😀
STUPIDITY REIGNS! Still, it's nice to see we still have a lot of money to waste!👍🤬

The start of a 15 minute city
I'm conviced the councillors in Cambridge and Oxfordshire have their heads in the clouds – They imagine the world as this bicycle centered utopia, the sort of stuff crack heads go on about
Thanks
Overkill, waste of time and money.
Yeah, I'm a cyclist and in favour of more cycling infrastructure, but I don't get this. In fact, I wish the money could have just been funnelled over to where I live, where we have a lot of traffic and almost no cycle lanes.
Labour pissing everyone’s money up the wall as usual.
One or more of the councillors involved probably live on the road and don't own a car
I'd rather they fixed the potholes, as a motorist and cyclist in Cambridgeshire they are everywhere! They are a much higher risk to cyclists than motorists.
This street looks awesome! Im glad these are becoming more popular!
More public money into private hands, I swear the consultants who advise on this stuff must get commission from the companies who deliver the work to make the council spend as much as possible.
I personally think its a bit over kill to have a cycle street, why couldn't they just of painted cycle lanes and widen the road a little
At least you won't be able to see their blood when it is spilt!
Enshitification
This would be amazing on the road out front of our house. The red paint was off putting at first, but for all the other improvements, I'd take it.
Quicker journey times for motorists, reduced air pollution, reduced use of NHS freeing services for others, less time off sick so more economically productive, improved executive function, so more productive…I cycle, we all benefit.
Interesting how the cost for this is deemed as being steep by some. Yet money poured on highways for vehicles is never really used as a counter argument, despite it being significantly more. I live very close to the road/bridge to nowhere in south lincolnshire that you covered in a video last year, i think. The cost for the roundabout next to it and the actual bridge was much more than this project, and we arent even allowed to use the bridge at the moment. Just look at the cost to fix pothole damage caused by lard arse overly heavy vehicles. Nothing compared to this.
I'm generally a fan of your stuff, but there was no hiding the anti-cyclist rhetoric here. Look forward to a better video next time.
The cost of this 500m length in proportion to the cost of the whole cycleway really highlights how cheap cycle infrastructure is compared to car infrastructure.
I really enjoy your YouTube channel. You have a fantastic sense of sarcastic humour which I thoroughly enjoy. Keep up the fantastic work. Your channel is a breath of fresh air in a politically correct, polluted media.
The contractors the council use must be laughing all the way to the bank. What a joke, let’s fix what we’ve got first before doing stupid stuff like this. Madingley road, Cambridge Road Shelford etc looked like they’ve been bombed. Also they’ve just got rid of hundreds of parking spots which people use to then walk in to Cambridge. They’ve forced people in to driving right in to the centre and using grande arcade car park, well done 👏
Adams Road was one of the streets closest to the centre without resident parking so it was always full of people parking up there. This was one reason for this change.
Having said that, I think they could have widened the pavement and removed the parking without the need for the red paint (but interesting to know what proportion of the cost was on the paint).
My council (Angus), spent £14 Million converting 1.7 miles of Dual carriageway to single with a dedicated path for cycling on the route of the old road. Four roundabouts were removed and replaced with 17 set’s of traffic lights 🚦! The result: Arbroath now has Birmingham levels of congestion at school run time!
Did nobody notice the last few seconds and a lady has bright red road to cycle along and still rides on the footpath🤬
@Jon Jefferson, did you find out what proportion of 2.4m was for
red tarmac:new drainage:junctions:lighting ?
There would be less cars om the road if we deported millions of people that are draining the tax pool.
Then there would be sooooo much more money for green initiatives and putting up rainbow flags (which are often resented by the people who we would be deporting).
Guess the goal is to just fill the country with as many people as possible and ruin our lives.
I like the idea but again a protected cycle path would've been sufficient. Maybe someone's mate in the council had an excess of red paint to sell.
I think if most people in the UK were asked why they don't cycle more they'd probably say something about how dodgy some of the drivers are. "Cyclists have priority" don't think many folk know that.
0:01 ooh those lovely sharp edged kerbstone to welcome every cyclist and any car tyre. I'm not just talking about looking the wrong way down the street, it's the same for flowing traffic as you can see further behind behind Jon.
See also 1:10, 3:26, 4:37, 7:23 and 8:10 compared to how they used to be, near deathproof.
Thanks Jon.
Does the University have a traffic research unit?
Ok. So we have money to build cycle ways in Cambridge (£800m) but not enough money to make the A1 in Northumberland safer and fit for purpose by making it a dual carriageway (£500m). 🤬😡🤬
Many councillors pockets lined with this one for sure.
You should do one on 'wotsit street' in Birkenhead before they remove it.
More money than sense.
Being Dutch i can tell you that cycle streets do slow cars down, they will still overtake you no matter how fast you cycle. In the Dutch road law there is no cycle street. To me it feels that with the creation of the cycle streets the task of slowing cars down have ben relegated to cyclists slowing cars down, which fails. Better to not have em that at least would portray clearly the state of the problem.
The big issue in Cambridge is, bit by bit, the council has been colonised by cycle obsessives who don’t care about anyone who isn’t EXACTLY like them. Live in the city and commute out daily? Don’t care, you won’t be immune from any congestion charge. Don’t care, we will put punishment architecture everywhere even though you have no alternative.
The GCP is now trying to put 20 limits everywhere they can, even though their own stats show accidents consistently go down.
Lots of corruption.
*Wonders if the imminent bankruptcy of our government might possibly be related to spending £4,000 per yard on… [checks] …painting a road red in order to reduce the death rate from zero to… errr… 🤔
Where I live cyclists don't require a license to be on the road. They're the most entitled users of the road.
Don't overtake? They spaz out.
Overtake at speed to ensure oncoming traffic isn't affected? They spaz out.
Overtake with plenty of space and no oncoming traffic? They spaz out.
Proper lane discipline on a roundabout, what's that?
Cyclists should be required to get a license to use public roads, just like drivers do.
I lived and studied in Cambridge for six years, three of which I spent at Robinson College, the ugly red brick building right next to Adam's Road which also owns half the houses along it. I cycled between the centre of town and West Cambridge sports centre and campus where the vet school is (for now) and can't say I ever felt unsafe cycling along Adam's Road. Cars were very aware of the large number of bikes and pedestrians and we more or less had priority anyway. I did drive up and down it a few times also and the lack of parking there now would be very annoying as there's literally nowhere else to park.
However, this street being a cycle street does make sense in that it's not linking up Grange Road with the cycle path at the end of Adam's Road, it's linking up the cycle path with Burrell's Walk (which has its own set of traffic lights for cyclists at the junction between Adam's Road, Grange Road and Burrell's Walk), which IS a shared pedestrian and cycle path heading towards the centre of Cambridge past the University library, over Queen's Road and then along another path between Trinity college and Trinity Hall College, spitting you out in the sort of pedestrianised centre of town. This path takes hundreds of bikes away from the actual main roads in Cambridge, doubtlessly improving traffic for the cars and buses that need to use them.
This is completing a cycling link between the centre of town and West Cambridge site, with cyclists being prioritised the whole way, and this is the only section of that route where cars and cyclists share the route. The rest of the city is almost certainly freer of cycle traffic for this route's existence. You could argue it's another town vs gown issue, with the university population being prioritised over local residents in terms of infrastructure etc. and probably altering Adam's Road was unnecessary and the money could have been spent improving cycle and car segregation elsewhere in the city.
So what was wrong with just putting in signs and maybe cameras for enforcement? Much cheaper.
They could have saved money not bothering with the cycle traffic lights because we all know cyclists ignore them anyway.
