Is this infrastructure I’m too European to understand? What am I looking at? Why does the bike lane just drop you into this intersection and picks you up on the other side if you happened to survive?

This is relatively common in Somerville, Mass. Definitely works well and makes things much less complicated than having to salmon for a couple blocks to cut a mile off of the route.

Why is this considered contraflow? Shouldn’t there be a lane in both directions in that case? But I do love the bold color and symbology to make it stand out.
