So I’m a bit of a bike wrenching noob. Have wrenched on a few bikes but am far from a wizard, and don’t have much component compatibility knowledge. Apologies if there is some online resource to find the answer to this question, but after a cursory search, not much was turning up for me. Could be because these are older components? Not sure. Anyways…

I got a good deal on an old Cannondale R400 in decent condition, with SRAM Rival double tap levers/shifters. I’m looking for a set of derailleurs to match. The bike also came with a 7 speed wheel set that I’d like to throw some new tires on and use. FSA Gossamer double on the front end.

What are some options that will work with my setup? And bonus question: where do I go in the future to figure this compatibility stuff out for myself? Thanks in advance!

Sram road stuff should work. Also ingrid makes adapters for most pull-ratios. And the chinese, that sram (them or chinese history) pissed off, still use the pull ratio on some of their products.

The bigger problem would be the freehub-body, a true 7-speed one is not reusable for the shifters.

  2. MicroShift.

I just built up (with help from my LBS mechanic to ensure parts compatibility) and R600 this summer.

You’ll want to check the pull ratios though, I’m not using SRAM shifters. I went with brakes and then downtube shifters, since the frame had braze-ons for it. Neat, but niche, your plan sounds as good or better.

  3. Check the series of the Rival shifters. You’ll need SRAM derailleurs to match. Check how many clicks the rear shifter can do. Then add one to get the total cog count. It’s probably 10 or 11.

Measure the width inside the rear dropouts. I think it’s going to be 130mm. Many 7s wheels are narrower, and the frame should not be squished to accommodate. Also, most 7s wheels are not compatible with a 10 or 11sp cassette, so you may need to shop for others.

  4. Looks like 10-speed Rival from pre-2012. They’ll work with any 10-speed SRAM road derailleurs. It looks like you can at least purchase Force new still. Highly recommend the medium cage rear derailleur since you can run up to a 32T cassette. Great option if you ever plan to do some real climbing.
