yeah you can get it straight but the spoke tensions probably wont be within an acceptable range of each other.

Yeah someone *might* be able to but the question is should it be trued in the first place?

If I were in the boonies with no cell service I’d try this: loosen all the spoke nipples one turn, then lay the wheel flat and press down hard on the two high spots to see if it will pop back into being fairly flat. Retension and true it into being rideably straight, then I’d ride home and rebuild or replace it because that rim is cooked.
carmikio on
In third world countries, yes, or at least it would be attempted, the rim would be removed from the spokes and straightened by applying forces, then the wheel would be reassembled and trued

Pull the spokes out. Lay it on the work bench and ratchet strap it down. Leave it for a week to let the metal try and relax. Apply heat periodically to aid in metal relaxing back. Get spokes that have an extra long threaded area and re-lace wheel. Really torque down on spokes to bring it back into true. You might have to repeat this process a handful of times. Then throw the wheel in the trash because it’s fucked and will never be right. Buy a new wheel. Problem solved

The real question is:
How good is it with salt and vinegar? Cause it’s a potato chip.

Depends how much your time is worth to you. I think you’d spend a ton of time and still end up with a subpar wheel

sometimes we could true a wheel like this. it would involve slamming it against the rubber floor mat several times though. probably would never be as strong as it originally was though.

This is great. Makes it much easier to climb steep ascents.

Infinity rim lol.

That’s a good candidate for wizard-truing. It’s collapsed into a Pringle because it relaxes all the spokes, but you might be able to pop it back straight by smacking it sideways into floor to pop it back into the straight even tension.
You need to put enough energy in to increase the spokes tension up to the true point.
If you get it right, it pops straight, and you look like a fucking wizard

That’s a pringle. Toss it.
dedolent on
not in any useful sense. you could *maybe* (probably not) get it straight enough to ride, but it would require leaving the spokes in such a poor state of tension – with some having to be way over-tightened and some having no tension at all – that it would quickly fall apart afterwards.

If it’s aluminium, yes, but no. You’ll need a new rim ASAP, but this can be made temporarily useable.
Loosen each spoke evenly by 1/2 – 1-1/2 turns. Install a tire. **I’ve never done this tubeless**
Inflate half way- about 40-50lbs or so with a tube.
Find the most out of true spots. Hold the wheel with one of the high spots at 12 o’clock facing away from you and your hands somewhere around 5 and 7 or 4 and 8, and whack it on the ground with authority, but not too hard. Be careful that the tire hits the ground, not the rim.
Repeat, going side to side across the wheel, not around the circumference. You should be able to bend it back enough that you can then get it nearly true using spoke tension alone.
The idea is that the lowered spoke tension will allow the rim to bend, but prevent it from bending too far while the tire protects the rim from being beaten on the ground.
You might get it close, but the spoke tension will never again be correct, and the rim will need to be replaced ASAP, but this will get you home, to your LBS, or maybe until your next paycheque…

I volunteer @ a local bike co-op & have seen one of the very experienced mechanics take wheels like this and whack one of the high sides on the floor. He usually does this for our poorer clients who can’t afford a new wheel. Sometimes, it snaps the wheel into a more workable shape.

Not with spoke tensioning alone. You’re going to have to bend the rim back as close to flat as you can and then true it.
New rim/wheel is the best option.

Figure out if it’s worth it to you. I usually take what I’d be paid in an hour and if it would take me more than a replacement is worth in my time plus parts? Nope
About as useful as this front wheel (taken at the end of the Tour of Denmark today), very glad I was on the opposite side of the road when the crash happened, as a spectator ended up with a head injury ( and a lot of cyclists took various injuries). A mechanic ran after with the rim and his shoes.
