Here’s a restoration that I just finished. My Dad found this early 90s Schwinn Impact Pro MTB on a scrap metal pile. I work for Cerakote as a videographer and got to make a full restoration video on it. I’ll link that below!
All of the original components were shot, so I ended up rebuilding it with:
Wheels, Crank & V-Brakes: Shimano XT
Drivetrain: Shimano Deore 1×11 (M5100)
Cockpit: Quill stem adapter + Ritchey riser bar
Saddle: WTB Volt
Tires: Specialized FastTrak (tried 26×2.3s first, but they rubbed, so I dropped down to 2.1s)

Fantastic job.
That said, I’ll never understand why the change from a quill stem to threadless. Having worked in a shop, I know it makes it easier to size a bike to a customer. However, building for myself and given a choice, I’d pick a quill stem over threadless eight days and Sunday.
