Not ideal, yes. If the upper bolt is all the way below then I’d still ride it.

  2. Integrated cable headsets suck and are hard to cut. As long as the top of the steerer is at least at the middle of the upper bolt, it should be fine.

Idk what the real world implications are, but I’d go off what the manufacturer says as the source of truth. A 5mm difference is a big enough deviation that I would hold the shop accountable.

Not ideal but upper bolt is below the top steerer tube so it is providing clamp load.

Possibly ok, but not great. While there’s some truth to the rule of thumb that you want the cut above the upper bolt, it’s also possible that the manufacturer intended some of that missing clamp area to be effective. I’d definitely be asking about a new fork

Once they get you a new fork, or however this gets resolved, i wouldn’t go back to that shop. A very disappointing lack of attention to detail

The top cap usually protrudes down which means you have to cut kinda it short for clearance. They left you enough room to adjust down a little from your fit position.
Depending of your exact genre of pedaling.they may have assumed the you would maybe adjust down into a more aggressive position.
Sometimes for a new setup.(Especially long distance riders)we would encourage people to live with spacers on top the stem until they were absolutely certain.
This aerodynamic internal cable setups are a motherfucker to deal with

  7. No question they owe u a new fork, assuming u were fit by the shop OR u specifically told them the spacers u needed under stem. The top of ur expander plug should b no more than 2mm below top edge of ur stem….full stop

Maybe they cut it after forgetting one of the 5mm spacers when measuring?

Also, realistically you’ll be fine with slightly too big of a gap there, so long as you can get adequate threads from the top stem cap into the expansion plug/star nut.

Tension headset and torque stem to spec. If the stem grips the steerer it’s all good. Arbitrary measurements are nonsense.

I know this doesn’t answer your question but things like this are the reason I don’t let anyone else touch my bikes but me.

Put the top cap on and forget about it, its fine.

How many catastrophic failures have you heard of because a steerer was cut slightly below manufacturers spec?

I don’t see the steer tube plug for setting headset preload. Did you take it out? The measurement really needs to take the plug height into account. They take up varying amounts of space and that cut may be perfect when the plug is installed. Pics of the plug installed to confirm.

I had almost the exact same thing happen on my last build, the LBS cut the steerer maybe 6mm below the top of the stem and I didn’t catch it until I got home. Bringing it back up is one of the most awkward conversations you can have with a shop, but in my case they ordered a new fork under warranty and swapped it without much hassle. Took the bike off my hands for about a week and a half though, which was annoying since it was my only ride. Lesson learned, now I always mark the cut line myself with a paint pen before they touch anything carbon. I’d at least give them a call and see what they say, even if you decide to ride it as is for now.

It’s fine, the top of the steerer looks to be above the top stem bolt which is all that matters

  15. It’s not right. I would not go back to the shop and I would try your damn best to get a new fork out of them. that being said i would ride it 24/7 w out batting an eye.

  16. I was in a similar position on my bike, ended up taking out a space to “buy” me some steerer tube, which fortunately I’d have done anyway so happier but was concerned when I first saw how low they cut it.
