We started this bike packing tour around Sjælland, Denmark on this older tandem bike. Unfortunately yesterday’s stage came to a stop at Tisvilde/Helsinge, when the hub (internal gear type) on our back wheel jammed: cracking sound, which we think are internal parts that failed, followed by that the bike can does not roll backwards and the pedals locked, so we can only roll downhill.
Do you have any suggestions on how to fix something like this, and hopefully keep the price tag low.
Are you from the area and or know anyone that are willing to help we would be soo grateful <3

I guess you need a bike shop on Monday.
It could be fixed, but more likely not.
A new rear wheel

Get a list of nearby bike shops and ring them first thing o Monday
That sadly screams it needs a new hub. Probably a gear snapped a tooth. Free wheel works, but reverse and forward pedaling are jammed.
Is that a Sturmey-Archer 3-speed? They never were very strong. Short answer is you need a new one, or new to you second-hand.
well … have fun finding a tandem rear wheel on short notice. but you are probably in the right area
There might be a temporary solution that rigs the hub at 1:1. Not ideal but gets you riding.
That back rim looks shot. There are serious rusted cracks around a few of the spoke holes. My suggestion is to get a new wheel. If you fix this one, the next pothole you hit may break it again.
Not helpful now but this is why usually people try to use a high quality durable bike for touring, not a low end and antique bike…
I suggest you guys get familiar with how to properly change gears on this machine. If you have been doing this under load… then it is likely that’s what caused the failure.
Sachs 3 gear? There are more of these than sand on the beach. Find a bike shop they will swab the wheel and hub and your good
