The bike shop guy said he could always save a chain when I was talking about used bikes having rusted chains, and I’m like… for a small amount of money and a minute or two of effort, just get a new chain.

I pulled a vintage bike out of a scrap pile once as a kid and the chain was one giant rusted piece. Kid me spent hours with wd40 and some pliers freeing up each link individually 😂

I’ve had a wet version of this – my dad used 20/50wt motor oil on his chain, and it collected every bit of dust and formed an amorphous blob of snot around the cassette. I did not get a photo unfortunately.
