When most people think of Manchester, they picture the city centre, football stadiums and old industrial buildings. But just a few miles away lies one of Greater Manchester’s most beautiful green spaces.
Join me on a relaxing bike ride through the Mersey Valley, following traffic-free paths along the River Mersey and exploring the beautiful Sale Water Park and Chorlton Water Park. There is no commentary—just six minutes of peaceful cycling and music.
The Mersey Valley is one of the largest green corridors in Greater Manchester, stretching for many miles alongside the River Mersey. It connects parks, woodlands, nature reserves and riverside paths, making it one of the best places in the region to explore by bicycle.
Sale Water Park was created in the 1970s from a former gravel quarry and today is a popular destination for walking, cycling and watersports, including sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding and open-water swimming. The park is also home to a wide variety of wildlife and forms part of the Mersey Valley’s network of green spaces.
Just a short ride away is Chorlton Water Park, another former gravel pit that has been transformed into a peaceful lake surrounded by woodland and meadows. It is designated a Local Nature Reserve and attracts many species of birds throughout the year, making it a favourite spot for nature lovers, photographers and birdwatchers.
One of the best things about cycling here is the variety of scenery. In just a few kilometres you can ride through riverside meadows, woodland trails, open lakeside paths and quiet nature reserves, all while staying almost entirely away from busy roads. The largely flat terrain also makes it suitable for families, leisure cyclists and anyone looking for a relaxing ride.
Whether you’re planning your next cycling adventure, looking for new places to explore around Manchester, or simply want to enjoy a few minutes of peaceful scenery, I hope you enjoy the ride.
