I’m looking at the Avid BB5 or BB7. I’m not sure if the extra price is worth it for the higher-end model, especially since my bike is cheap and my income is low. Also, should I get just the caliper or would it be better to replace my rotor at the same time? The braking surface seems fine, but there’s some rust on the rotor.

Should I replace the front brake too, even though it works fine?

  1. The best way to determine whether you need to replace the rotor too is to measure it. 1.5 mm is the mininmum thickness for a Tektro or shimano rotor. If you don’t have callipers to measure the rotor then I’d go to a local makerspace or bike co-op. Even going to a bike store, just explain the situation and they’d be willing to measure it for free im sure. Customers so rarely care about safety that it would be enough of a relief.

As for the actual caliper, you may notice a change in brake feel if you only change one, otherwise there’s no real reason they have to match. Get what you can afford, but the TRP spyre is a good option. The sram BB7 isn’t great tbh
