For gravel packers with racks: I’m debating whether I remove my rack and fenders in between tours…

My next packing season will likely be Sept-October.

I think I’m divided between keeping it rigged & tour ready and wanting a sleeker ride for when I’m just doing local road & gravel.

Other considerations include wear & tear, risk of losing parts, storage…

So, question: what do you do? Whats your system for balancing day to day riding and everything you strap to your bike for a tour?

  1. Yes it stays on. Im not that much of a performance hog and its just too usefull to remove it.

I keep the rack always on and with a small-ish MIK trunk bag on top for whatever stuff I need; tools, clothes, bike lock etc. Honestly I couldn’t go back to riding without storage.

Fenders I do take off since they’re quick attack, but I plan on getting full lenght ones that will probably just stay on indefinitely.

  3. I keep the rack on. I find it handy for commuting, grabbing groceries, or just strapping things to from time to time when out for a ride. Only racks I take on and off are the fork mounted cages.

No, I use an Ortlieb Quickrack. I only need about 10 seconds to remove my rack.
