You can cycle from Covent Garden in central London to Clapham Junction in south west London entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.

The route is 9.5km long (5.9 miles) and makes use of the new protected lanes on Queenstown Roa, as well as parts of Cycleway 8, Cycleway 33, and London Cycle Network route 37.

  1. Thanx, Jon! Hey – where is Ilderton rd Southwark? My maps won't show it. I was following up one of your Twitter vids thinking it was Ilderton Rd near Millwall's Den but no…

  2. Another great route on a lovely day. The route from Embankment to Clapham Junction looks to be a great way to cycle. Whenever I see your videos that start in the centre of London I just think that without a lot of effort the routes could be made better for cyclists and pedestrians and even cars. Thanks for the video today.

  3. Thanks for this. Your tip for the right onto Grosvenor is really useful for me.

I have a question: How do I do a right onto Vauxhall Bridge from Grosvenor Road embankment (coming from the west)?

The route from Chelsea Bridge down to the roundabout is now finished! Excellent. This was quite a horrible gutter pothole hell.

I regularly used this route down the side of BP to go to Vauxhall via Nine Elms Lane, but gave up because Nine Elms Lane was so hobbled by construction traffic it was dangerous. I suppose it will continue to be generally horrible until the last tower down there has been completed.

  4. Yeah all of those wands approaching Chelsea Bridge have been removed. I raised it in streetcare at the start of the resurfacing over a month ago.

  5. 9:04 this lane is so much nicer than it's predecessor and that turning into Battersea park looks great.

Sometimes in the past I've taken the 2nd turning on the left to get to Sopwith Way to get to Battersea powerstation.

It's not as beautiful a route as the park, forces you to go back on yourself and has speed bumps.

  6. No wands along the whole of Chelsea embankment is a shame since it's something that could be done quickly(literally in a couple of nights) and cheaply and massively improve a long stretch of road and doesn't even come at the expense of cars so why not. That roundabout does look annoying, they should add like a short 5 second bike phase between every phase or something. Loads of places are like this for pedestrians too which causes most people to ignore them.

  7. @LondonCycleRoutes, thanks for the video!

I'm moving to London in October, and I'll be living on Porchester Terrace, right opposite Hyde Park

Would the best daily cycling route to Holborn be through Hyde Park?

I'm also planning to visit Battersea Power Station. I noticed the route in your video passes very close to it

  8. I think you might've encountered a Parkrun in that park. The runners looked very parkrunny to me. Some of them might've used one of your videos to choose a cycle route somewhere at some time? Cycling would also seem a very parkrunny thing to do. And parkrunning (which can include walking as best you can at 80 years of age while the volunteers patiently wait for you to summit your Everest once again this week) is perhaps a transportcyclic thing to do as well?

  9. The new lane is nice, it’s just frustrating that it took so long to get from the planning stage to completion. We really need to speed up infrastructure planning and delivery in this country!

  10. Great route. My only concern is the bike lanes have become very dangerous not because of vehicles but by wild Lime Bike cyclists.Using headphones and under taking is quite common now. With headphones I found your awareness of others in your vicinity is highly reduced

  11. Hi,
A couple of places felt not ideal.
1:41 temporary obstruction, just not sure how long for
14:31 the barrier was somewhat unexpected, though I'm sure it is easier to see at normal speed, and not via a camera
14:59 the low loader next to a parked car, yes it is temporary, and plenty of view time.

    Nice route though.

  12. Lovely video great to see all the new cycling infrastructure. London really is becoming a cleaner, quieter and modern city for getting around on two wheels. No wonder the sun is shining 🙂

  13. Wonderful video tour. YT Algorithm dropped this video in my feed. I live in Baltimore, Maryland in the US. I was surprised to see the architecture of London row homes very similar to what we have here. Our biking infrastructure is growing too, but yours is amazing. We do have some protected bike lanes with curbs. Not enough if you ask me. But, I have to save we do have a decent shared bike/walking trail system that I enjoy on a daily basis. I may never get over there to experience the bike paths myself. But watching you do it for me with directions and local highlights is just as good for me. BTW: you earned a new sub today. Keep up the good work. I've got to go clean my chain, put it off for too long.

  14. Your political comments are interesting. No doubt, Labour and the Greens love to support cycling as the only people who can afford to cycle are the wealthy elite. The wealthy elite vote Labour and Greens these days. Poorer types can't afford to cycle, as they can't afford to live close enough to cycle. Real estate and rent prices force poorer people to live too far away to cycle. And these days, poorer people don't vote Labour or Greens. So, yes, there is a political split based around cycling. Cycling is the commute of the wealthy elite, poorer people have to use a car, or public transport.

  15. that roundabout really is a nightmare. You did really well to get through in just 3 minutes. Most people seem to just cycle on the pavement and take the most direct route to their exit when turning right.
