After being delayed by storms and hospital appointments, I finally managed to get away for another winter ride! Today was a 59-mile journey from Bognor Regis up to Chertsey. It was a surprisingly frosty start, but the sun came out to give some stunning views over Bury Hill and the Surrey Hills. I took a scenic route through Fittleworth, Kirdford, and Dunsfold (past the old Top Gear track), eventually skirting around Guildford and passing the impressive McLaren Technology Centre. I’ve pitched up at the Chertsey Camping and Caravanning Club Site, which has only just reopened after being flooded!

Today’s Ride Distance: 59 Miles.
Route: Bognor Regis to Chertsey via Berry Hill, Fittleworth, Kirdford, Dunsfold, and Guildford. Highlight: Finding a fantastic French-style bakery in Kirdford for a mid-ride coffee.

I’m Garry McGivern (Travelsonabike2), and I’ve been travelling the world by bike since 2008. Solo self-supported bicycle touring on my trusty bike, Passepartout. My vlogs are unscripted, down-to-earth and honest—sharing the highs, the lows, and everything in between of a long-distance cyclist. I’ve now cycled more than 60,000 miles around the world 🌏 and I’m still going.

My video 📹 blogs complement my written blogs, which I publish daily on my website, https://www.garrymcgivern.com/, each time I head off on a bicycle tour. Bear in mind when watching. The video 📹 is unscripted and recorded as I cycle along 🚲, and might not be of the highest quality. The footage is then cobbled together when I get home. It’s certainly no Hollywood 🎬 production. But it might just make you smile and inspire you to get on your bike and head off on your own bicycle tour.

DCM Journey & Awareness As many of you know, I live with Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy (DCM). Today was a reminder of how much post-surgery recovery is a game of managing energy and symptoms. The cold weather really affects my hand dexterity, making it tricky to use my phone or adjust my gear on the go. I also found myself avoiding some of the steeper, busier hills in Guildford [18:35]—it’s much safer to take the Ring Road when my coordination isn’t 100%. Managing the “camping faff” at the end of a long day is always the final hurdle, but the hot showers here at Chertsey are a lifesaver!

  1. Thanks very much for your video, which I really enjoyed. Can you tell me, were there any electrical hook ups to recharge my bike battery? Thank you.
