Yep, all perfectly normal, the qr ends have enough space for the springs to collapse.

  2. The springs are in no way necessary. Just ditch them if they get in the way.

The only purpose of the springs is to help with placing the axle into the fork dropout, as they keep the open quick release centered.

The spring is basically to keep the skewer centered on quick release rod. If the rack is supposed to be mounted directly to skewer, I would remove spring and look at if it will reach to skewer tightening nut. Can’t really say much with the few pictures you only have.

  4. The gap in the rack mount is just as wide as the gap the spring goes thru in the QR dropout.

not sure that rack is going to work on your fork though due to the raised lips around the dropout (known as lawyer lips because they were added after the axle came out of some bikes and people sued.)

But you can file down the lawyer lips if you need to, or you can add a washer to fill the gap

Geometrically speaking it sounds like you’re struggling to get all the angles correct to make it fit nevermind even getting it flush to secure the wheel with the QR. I’ve seen these work on some bikes but of course it’s a very case by case basis. I would always prefer fender mounts and rack mounts on any bike, but unfortunately that’s not always the case. I’ve seen lots of people just use hose clamp type things very successfully in rear racks, not sure how safe those are on the front. There’s still a few tricks you can try, but it might require a different rack for sure.

haha wait, lawyer lips?? that name is incredible, never knew they were called that. good to know the springs are basically just there for centering tho.
