Love there science based videos even though sometimes the conclusions aren’t clear cut. Prefer these types of videos and discussions 1000% over sensational content “eat 140g/h!”
Rubbish ,,,,,complete nonsense. No sugar , no fruit , no dairy for a race meal only Complex carbohydrates to release the energy without spiking blood sugar levels and insulin levels with eggs . Why eggs, protein water fat and if you get nervous they can come out your nose . The best is an omelet with eggs and sweet potatoes and salt , if you going to consume this glucose for sustained power in a real race only if it is under one hour from the time you eat it to the end. . More than likely you will get sick dizzy or vomit. My knowledge comes from our medical background in our family and as an athlete Complex carbs are released slowly and steadily without a spike / crash-so the science of humans will never change . Sweet potatoes, figs , hard cooked rice , with some eggs and salt. The eggs are like a way to fill you stomach a bit so all of the water doesn’t slosh around and helps with absorption. Oatmeal with only salt in the morning and room temp water but not too much . Helps with hydration. Coconut water as an electrolyte. We also ate fig newtons yummy and good in the pocket . Most people train wrong , eat wrong , over train . If you want to go fast , you must realize it takes proper training and rest so you can peak. Start with your ph of your body and some fresh water bottles new ones . Detox , lemons and limes , ocean fish eggs , rice and vinegar,,a Japanese diet . Train less the week before the big one with massage a couple swims some sprints for less than half of your regular training ride and have nice poops . My Go to night before meal was some sushi miso soup and one sake to help me get to sleep. Not sure about you but this advice could be dangerous. My friend a 3 time world champion and 2 time Olympian said more important is what not to eat than a taking a vitamin .
I wish the cycling nutrition industry would come up with more environmentally friendly packaging. I don't use gels because of the single use non-recyclable nature of the tubes. I bring bananas, homemade energy bars., etc. Sure, my efforts might not be as massive as others but I'm happier fueling in a way that doesn't hurt the planet. It would be very appreciated and useful if GCN could create an environmental sustainability episode around fueling.
Great video, I will need to watch it a few more times to better digest the info.
But I am not understanding how to switch from Carb energy to Fat energy. Is it simply to not have the reserve of Carbs to force the Fat energy ?
Thanks again for this great video/research.
Carbs are npt required unless you are from the old generation
cyclic dextrin is the shit (e.g. skratch super high carb). i really wouldn't rely heavily on one lab test. your body probably wasn't in peak absorption mode. and as discussed in the video we're never fueling with straight glucose these days because it doesn't work. it's usually maltodextrin and fructose, etc. were they actually giving you maltodextrin or some other form of glucose?
Really cool video, I feel that i have learned much here. Thanks GCN!😊
Your body only requires 5g of glucose, one teaspoon of sugar in the blood at any one time. Any increase above this amount is ushered out of the blood to keep you alive, most of it into storage in the muscles. When those are full it will then start to store it in vital organs, somewhere where it’s not supposed to be, overtime causing damage, disease and malfunction. The hormone managing this system is insulin, and overtime with daily overuse becomes less able to perform this crucial task, leaving higher circulating glucose levels in the blood which starts to cause all downward spiralling diseases, the first one commonly known as diabetes. We all love to ride our bikes, and want to do it healthily throughout our lives, but proceed with caution as carbohydrates in any form are damaging to your overall health 😢
Wow! Tim's got huge vastus muscles! (Look at him seated, the bulge on the inner part of the knee area) 💪
I have no idea what I’m supposed to take away from this video. Didn’t understand what that guy was saying at all
Your ignorance is incomprehensible and makes me angry. In fact, even athletes don’t need any external carbohydrate intake. Fat-adapted athletes can reach impressive fat oxidation rates during intense exercise – up to over 85% of VO₂max – before the crossover point to glucose occurs. But the body produces that glucose itself via gluconeogenesis. Carb loading is an obsolete concept for sugar addicts who are on the fast track to becoming diabetic. Familiarize yourselves with the research of Prof. Tim Noakes and Jeff Volek, among others. I know what I’m talking about. I’ve switched to no-carb and I’m better on the bike than ever. Science backs this up. Interesting point: even minimal dextrose intake has a significant effect – but it’s psychological, not physiological (keyword: central governor).
I use 81g of carbs in maple syrup with 1 LMNT packet per 1L bottle. On a 3 1/2 hour ride, I feel strong and no gut issues
Real men use 120g of Sriracha Honey
can we talk about the lad's quads?
Muito interessante, vou assistir outra vez
Eu estou consumindo melado de cana e olha fez uma diferença muito grande
Gels themselves make me sick – just use table sugar, cane sugar, etc
I've been experimenting with nutrition, and for me, it seems, if I'm going to use carbs, I need a shit load, and if they run out, I bonk HARD!! I'm much better off being more metabolically flexible to reduce the need for so much glucose.
Honey, a bit of salt and two slices of cucumber. Tastes amazing and fresh
One big reason why this insanity came to be, has to be plain capitalism. No money to be made by people solely relying on fatty meat like our ancestors reliably did. Imagine us running after pray for hours, but having to restock on sugar gels, or else we'd run out of energy. We would have gone extinct a long time ago.
why dont you just adjust to a carnivore diet and teach your body to burn fat…long term effects of relying on carbs is incredibley bad including diabetes, metabolic health issues and even heart disease
I think that fatten someone's up with the unique non essential macronutrient has its consequences.
1,5 years feeding myself on a animal fat (a lot) and protein exclusively (grass fed ruminant meat). Among other noticeable things, my total testosterone increased from 380 to 944 ng/dl meanwhile.
I prefer hormonal balance and be aligned with my biology as a human male and global health, than the eventual endorphins and the obsession with sport performance I had in the past.
Advice: questioning all wherever it comes, be unconventional and self-experience yourself. It's the most efficient way to empower yourself.
I run 4 times a week and use a turbo trainer randomly. All my exercises are done while fasting. I have been doing OMAD fasting for 2 years. My body runs on fat. I never run out of energy. My meal is between 4-6 pm and I don’t feel hungry. This feels totally normal to me. Is anyone else doing this? I’m feeling a bit of a weirdo after watching this
More unscientific information for the masses. Read Professor Timothy Knoakes studies on nutrition and carbohydrates. He is the person who literally wrote the book on carbohydrates.
I watched this whole video and feel like I haven’t learned anything 😢
Interesting info, thanks alot ❤😅
Shouldn't the test have been done correctly for both Glucose and Fructose pathways? It's weird that they just did the Glucose test! They briefly addressed it in the video but it's not sufficient. They should have done the test together.
That it gets u type 2?
it was probly just an off day!
Pros burn 1200kcal per hour. In Zone 2 thats 50% carbs or 600kcal/hr. At higher intensities even more. So provided they can tolerate 100g they actually use it up. Weekend warriors don't need more than 60g. They don't have the power nor the duration. Actual power numbers do matter.
120 g glucose per hour is very high and pretty much double what ordinary people can consume without gastric problems. For a 2:1 maltodextrin and glucose mix, it is only adviced to consume about 90 grams at most.
Dr. Podlogar is an incredible source of sports nutrition knowledge. I've learned so much about nutrition as related to my own cycling performance.
