Today, the entry point for going mountain biking just got a little bit lower. The Ozark Trail Ridge, a $398 bicycle sold at Walmart stores, actually seems like it would be worth owning—that is if you’re okay with rebuilding it after you take it home.

My criticism of department store bikes was NEVER that they are cheap, it was always that they are ridiculous. Why does a $150 bicycle have 18 gears and rear suspension? Why not put that money towards better parts and serviceability? I’ll tell you why. The simplest bike with the fewest features looks like a terrible deal to an inexperienced buyer.

But some of us are, in fact, looking for a simple and affordable bike that’s easy to service and possible to upgrade, and the Ozark Trail Ridge was clearly designed with that in mind. Today, I’m going to show you the Ridge and all the reasons it’s the best department store bike in its price range.

  1. What size Ozark bike do I need? I’m a 32yr old male, 5 foot 5, 178lbs. I haven’t biked in years but I want to get back into it as a hobby. I was looking at the Ozark Trail 27.5" M.1 Vibe Mountain Bike. Medium frame, 17 inch. Can anyone tell me if that would be good? I do remember that I didn’t like huge bikes. Thanks to anyone who can help.

  2. A reputable bike company has to be making the bike for Walmart. It's a great entry level first time mountain bike for a first time mountain biker. I ride a hard tail Trek and I would buy an Ozark Trail bike.

  3. I hope you taught that department store guy what to look for in a bike and not left him thinking his customers should opt for the boat anchor bikes (cheap full suspension bikes) instead.

There is a brand of boat anchor bikes here in Norway called "eurobike". And not long ago I saw one in the bike parking at work. I took a photo and I'll compare it with the next times I see it just to see how fast it detoriates. Wasn't the worst they sell, but still Torney and a big o'l pogo stick fork.

  4. This is the direction Walmart has been going with all of the Ozark Trail products – look across the line of all the products over the last 6 years – Ozark Trail has really stepped up the quality for their outdoor products.

  5. I just bought one and it is still priced at 398 and it doesn’t appear that they changed anything on it. I’m going to do my initial adjustments and take it for a ride today

  6. Just bought an ozark trail ridge m.1 27.5 with a medium frame will it be able to handle commuting back and forth to work and light trails that can get pretty muddy though and should I take the pedals off to grease the threads or does Walmart take the time to actually grease them and tighten everything properly

  7. I just bought this bike due to my car breaking down and I’m going to be riding it daily to work I couldn’t be happier with this purchase

  8. My local Walmart sports section has a bike guy there, he steers people away from some of the expensive stuff when they don't need it and he gives the bike a once over and makes adjustments for the person riding it
