Hello everyone I recently noticed a dent under the top tube of my steel frame. Now I don't baby the bike but I took really good care of it and never crashed, fell or dropped the bike to somewhere as far as I can remember and I dont know where this dent is coming from.
The dent is far away from the welds so I am not really concerned about the durability but as far as I know top tube is a compression point with usually thin tubing. Also the dent is under top tube bolts, I don’t know how much of a difference that makes.I would really appreciate it if you could guide me a little.

  1. does not matter at all. my steel commuter had 20+ dents like that and most were deeper / worse. i rode that bike harder than a any gravel bike

There is no pinching and it’s not at a brazed seam or weld so that is cosmetic damage.

The paint is intact so there’s no danger of rust.

You don’t need to do anything as it’s perfectly fine.

With dents what you need to keep an eye out for it pinching in the metal.

What is pinching? a dent with lots of tiny cracks/ creases raidating from it. It looks like the metal has been pinched hence the name.

  3. that’s an extremely common place to get a dent when locking the bike to a sign or somesuch. you can buy a velcro pad that protects the frame there. I bought a steel bike with a much larger dent in the same place and rode it for many years. Reynolds 531 frame, glorious
