Bought a barely used Surly Ogre with a Sram NX crank and Advent-X derailleur. Any idea why something clunks and the chain loosens when I pedal backwards? Sorry about wind and road noise.

  1. That would be an issue of some sort w/ the freehub, something resulting in too much friction. If it’s really barely ridden it might just be seals that are sticky because they are so new, but could be grease that is too thick, or something else.

If it were me I’d not do anything about it until after riding it a couple hundred km.

And try riding in shoes, instead of sandals, in case the bike is just embarrassed to be seen ridden by someone in sandals.

It’s just the inertia of the heavy wide range cassette, which is spinning fast while you pedal in a high gear, driving the chain forward when you suddenly stop pedalling.

You’ll notice in your video, the second/third times you do it you actually stop pedalling with a slightly smoother/less jerky action and the effect is less pronounced and the chain doesn’t hit the chain stay.

  3. I think your B-screw is out of adjustment which is creating some added pressure on your cassette and subsequently preventing the freehub from working well. OR something is up with the upper jockey wheel itself. If you’ve removed your jockey wheels in the past, make sure you put them back in the right places and the correct orientation. Typically they have arrows in the rotation direction.
