Join me and my mate Simon as we tackle the entire DSMR—a challenging 56km one-way ride from Paradise Point all the way down to the Point Danger lookout at Coolangatta/Tweed Heads. We rode the full return trip for an epic 105km day in the saddle!

This ultimate Gold Coast cycling route takes us past every major landmark: the Broadwater Parklands, The Spit, Surfers Paradise, Burleigh Heads, Tallebudgera Creek, and Currumbin. See what it’s like to navigate the traffic, the beachfront boardwalks, and the final killer climb up Hill Street!

🙏 Remembering Darren Smith: We trace the path of Gold Coast Olympic Cyclist, Darren Smith, who tragically lost his life while training at just 20 years old. We ride in his memory and search for his elusive memorial plaque along the way.

  1. Well done John. Nice ride in what is one of the flashest, prettiest urban stretches in Oz. 👍 was surprised you missed the pretty dirt track section from the Spit to Mainbeach.

  4. At 40.27, that used to be a tidal pool. There are a lot of them along the Sydney beaches. Very nice pools, good for swimming. I went through a stage where I wanted to visit all of them one by one and then got bored with that project. lol

  6. Top effort again mate, well done to you both! I'm definitely keen to ride this route one day, just need to find the time and when the weather is great.

  7. The plaque to Olympic cyclist Darren Smith is affixed to the stone pylon marking the start of the 48 km Darren Smith Memorial Route, at the Captain Cook Memorial Park lookout:

Location: Captain Cook Memorial Park lookout, Boundary Street, Point Danger, Coolangatta QLD 4225, Australia

  8. I've done a small segment of that ride a few times, with the Train to reduce the burn.
I park the car at Varsity-Lakes station, then train to Helensvale, then ride through Arundel, south down Captain Cook Drive to avoid the shops [too dangerous with all those driveways] , East on Musgrave to the Broadwater, then the run to Burleigh Heads is obvious and lovely, and from Burleigh any number of routes back to Varsity Lakes station.
[ But beware that you can't cross 'southport-burleigh road' except at Christine Ave or [nearly] Reedy-Creek-Road – so it is yet another Road that cuts a suburb in-half instead of connecting the suburb! ]
