10. SOUNDBITE (English) Amelie Kenny, 23-years-old Parisian student:
“It’s been the worst week that we’ve had in this apartment. It started off okay, I thought it would be short, and the problem has just been that it doesn’t recede even in the evening, so you don’t even get that time to, to have some cool air and to pretend it’s not there before it comes back. And this particular apartment, because of the fact we have only one window and because of the fact it gets light from about midday to when the sun sets, which here is like 10:00 pm, it means it’s just baking in the whole afternoon and it’s impossible to just get a respite from it.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Amelie Kenny, 23-years-old Parisian student:
“She, she sleeps better than I do, I think just in general, but I, I have a battle between the window being open and the window being closed because, if the window’s open, it’s a bit cooler because I’m letting some of the air come in, but it’s so loud because there’s people in the habit of driving their motorbikes through the street as loud as possible at 3 in the morning or people screaming in the streets at 3 in the morning. And so I’ll wake up and I’ll decide ‘it’s too hot, I have to open the window’. I open the window, go back to sleep. An hour later I wake up, I say ‘it’s too loud, I have to close the window.’ I close the window. It’s too hot and it’s a very very Kafkaesque cycle against the window.”

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Francesca Pilia, 23-years-old Parisian student:
“It just has to do first of all with the color which is dark blue, which means that clearly instead of reflecting light and reflecting heat, it actually traps it within itself and because there’s probably a lack of insulation because these are pretty old buildings, even like the apartment is recently renovated. But one of the biggest sources of emissions in France and in Europe is buildings, not only construction materials and everything and construction processes, but mainly from using energy to cool down or heat up the buildings because they’re not well insulated.”

19. SOUNDBITE (French) Gin Dujardin, Parisian roofer:
“It’s very, very hard because the zinc is very hot, the welds don’t hold, the equipment, so we can’t, and even humans aren’t made to work at 43°C (109,4 C). We have to stop. It’s the Dubai temperatures, it’s impossible.”

  1. They should also try wearing cotton woven clothing, not knits. But it is true, there's this thing called air conditioning . . .🤨 And don't criticize me for being an unfeeling American – If you refuse to do what you can to relieve your problems, then don't come crying to me.

  2. I am getting the impression there is little or no air conditioning in France. There isn't much in Germany or the UK either. That is what makes heat waves so dangerous.

  3. ⭐I would not be inside. I'd find a tree to hangout under & would most definitely order a few fans for more comfort at night. Oh yeah I'd get two pillows or chairs to sit on the balcony & would sleep on the balcony at night. Just plug your ears with headphones or whatever you use to listen to music on your phone to drown out most of the noise. Oh and I pray for your health and safety during this very hot heatwave ❤🙏

  4. Chinese pig farmers installed an AC wall unit for their pigs. Possibly the LG 8,000 BTU unit with 3 cooling fans, or maybe even the Kenmore 16K 5-on-1 unit with auto-restart. Very very smart people.

  5. I don’t know if Paris is usually hazy, but look at that. Really hazy. When it’s like that, it’s a headache inducing kinda heat. I hope all the Parisians stay cool out there. 😊

  6. This is all the result of declaring climate change as an emergency. We’re not ready to make a switch away from fossil fuels. Our current fragile society is not resilient enough to survive without air conditioning.

  7. Hyperscale data centers are significantly contributing to extreme heat in Europe, with recent studies and local observations in June 2026 highlighting a growing "data heat island" effect. Research led by the University of Cambridge indicates that these facilities raise surrounding land temperatures by an average of 3.6°F (2°C), with extreme cases reaching 16.4°F (9°C), affecting over 340 million people globally.

In Slough, UK, identified as Europe’s largest data center hub, residents report unbearable heat, with local temperatures recorded up to 9°C higher than surrounding areas. The concentration of energy-intensive AI infrastructure, including facilities for major tech firms, is creating microclimates that exacerbate local heatwaves. This thermal impact extends up to 6.2 miles from the centers, compounding the stress on European infrastructure already strained by record-breaking summer temperatures and water scarcity.

Heat Island Effect: Data centers release waste heat from computation and cooling systems, creating localized warming that persists even miles away.

Infrastructure Strain: Many European facilities were built before recent extreme weather patterns, lacking the resilience for current heat levels.

Strategic Shift: The crisis is driving hyperscalers to relocate to cooler regions like the Nordics, where natural cooling and abundant power are available.

Regulatory Response: European regulators are increasingly scrutinizing data center energy use and proposing measures to capture waste heat for district heating.

  8. It's inhuman without air😊 condition. In Chinese, is called cool air, or cold air 冷氣。I grew up in Taiwan 60 years ago without 冷氣。Can't imagine that it happens now in Europe.

  9. Lol with French people spending $5000 for a Midea split AC which usually cost $300 and are in short supply.. I don't hear to much complaints about Chinese Over Capacity nonsense complaints

  10. For all wondering why most ppl in europe dont have AC. We just just didn't really needed it. Our weather is most of the year cold/ moderate. At least in middle and north europe. The last really hot summer I remember Was 2018. All the other years it was warm but you could survive without AC. Also its getting cool at night and most houses are made of stone Walls. So it was usually doable to stay in a moderate temperature. But things seem to change, I am pretty sure more and more ppl will have AC in their homes. Just want to make clear that we are not stupid. Thanks. From Germany.

  14. 20 years ago Paris had the same heat wave , 15000 people died from that. Yet, nothing was learned besides “from the river to the sea” 🤣🤣
